Diagnosis begins with a complete history and physical examination. Your physician will ask questions about your symptoms, how your problem is affecting your activities, where you feel pain and if you have numbness or weakness in your arms.
Your physician also will want to know what positions or activities make your symptoms worse or better. Physicians will use your report of pain to help identify which disk is causing problems and if a nerve is being compressed by vertebrae.
The physical examination may include testing your skin sensation, muscle strength and reflexes. Other diagnostic tests may include:
- Computed tomography (CT) myelogram
- CT scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging
